The first single malt from Hokkaido's Akkeshi Distillery, released 2020, blending non-peated bourbon and sherry cask spirit with red wine and peated mizunara cask maturation; named for the Ainu word for red-crowned crane
Akkeshi has no fixed core range; instead it releases numbered single malts and blends tied to Japan's traditional 24 solar-term calendar. This is the 14th release, named for the first of the terms marking early spring, and is the distillery's most heavily peated whisky to date, made with Hokkaido-grown barley (including 5-year-old local malt) and matured in a mix of Hokkaido Mizunara oak, ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and ex-red wine casks. Akkeshi was sited specifically for a climate resembling Islay's, with coastal fog rolling in from the Bekanbeushi wetlands.
