Colonel Joseph Williams, a Revolutionary War veteran, founded the Williams Distillery in 1768 on an 8,000-acre North Carolina land grant; renamed for descendant Nicholas 'Old Nick' Williams around 1903, it grew into one of the country's most revered whiskey brands before Prohibition agents destroyed 28,000 gallons of its aging whiskey in 1920. Descendants Van, John, Zeb, and Matt Williams revived the family distillery on the same property in 2015.
