Traces to the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, acquired in 1869 by Thomas H. Handy, who championed rye whiskey as the base for the Sazerac cocktail; the modern Sazerac Company, dated to 1850, has been owned by the Goldring family since 1948. Not a distillery itself, but a large privately held American spirits conglomerate whose 1992 purchase of the historic George T. Stagg distillery (renamed Buffalo Trace) and subsequent acquisitions of Barton 1792, A. Smith Bowman, and the Weller and Van Winkle brands made it one of the two largest spirits companies in the US, with its principal office in Louisville, Kentucky.
