Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the 'father of Japanese whisky,' who studied distilling in Scotland from 1918; began as Dai Nippon Kaju (making apple juice while the whisky matured) before renaming itself Nikka in 1952. Now owned by Asahi Group Holdings, it operates two Japanese distilleries, Yoichi (1934) and Miyagikyo (1969), plus Scotland's Ben Nevis Distillery, acquired in 1989.
